RUNWAYNEWS SPEAKS TO DESIGN HOUSE: KOOAN
RN: How did you get into fashion designing?
I always liked to dress the way I wanted to, and also wanted my friends to dress the way I wanted. There were no stores that had what I wanted, so I started making my own clothing. My grandmother taught me how to sew when I was in high school.
RN: What inspires the style and looks you put together?
It's inspired by KOOan and KOOan's people! I create the looks me and my friends like to wear. Yes! I put it all together, right now, the KOOan factory is being run by myself at the moment.
RN: What would you say seperates your designs from others out there?
I have a lot more jump suits than others and I like playing with fabric, so you will see more fun in ways of fabrication.
RN: What type of consumers are you looking to wear your clothing?
EVERYONE! I'd love to have many different consumers, but for now I am most concentrating on women and men 18-39. But I have a lot of friends in age of 40-70 so I think when the time comes, I would like to do more variations. Soon!!
RN:You said you are currently working with the artist "JONTE". Tell us about that experience.
JONTE is a crazy dancer,singer,performer,artist. He presents some of my outfits the best way, definetly one of my big inspirations lately. I work as I watch his work and life and create something cute for him to perform and he wear from "KOOan's Closet" as we style together every other day. He is an upcoming singer who danced for Janet, Madonna, and is currently Beyonce's choreograher. We are also working as a package of Choreographed Dancer with Super Outfits!!
So please looking forward to seeing what we are woking on now when it comes out!
RN: In Beyonce's video "FREAKUM DRESS" the artist Jonte was wearing your creation. How did that come about?
I had a collaborative fashion show with theater people in Lincoln Center and I was told Lincoln Center never had a fashion show before? (I'm not sure) and I asked my friend, JONTE, to model one of my outfits, it was totally him and needed to be him. We knew each other as crazy persons in the world, but we never looked at each others work until that day, and he saw my collection at the show and he liked it.
He told me he was doing Beyonce's video , so I was like take whatever you can fit in and dance, and we found out all my clothes were dancable!! My whole collection moved to LA for reharsal, and Beyonce and her mom liked it, cause he was wearing different KOOan outfits everyday. When they came back to NY for Freakum Dress, it was Boom! Let's do with these outfits! JONTE and Ramon had my outfits (collaboration with Crayon Lee)
RN:Is there a siginificance to the name KOOAN?
It's soooo mis-spelled, probably should have been KOAN but It spell it KOOan. KOOan. KOOan. KOOan!!!!!
It means KOOan!!!! I named it to English when I didn know English much.... so. what!?
RN: Whats next for KOOAN?
I was working in my factory in my APT but now im getting my production done, so you will see my stuff in stores really soon!!!! wooooo!!!!!!!
